Highlight: 1999 estimated cotton production has been reduced by 120,000 MT down to 4 MMT to reflect provincial production estimates. Planted area and trade were also revised slightly. The China National Cotton Exchange opened in December, but is currently only handling 1993 crop cotton. Procurement prices have fallen sharply compared to this time last year, leading to improved export prospects and lower input prices for the textile industry. Conditions for the textile industry have improved as restructuring continues. Textile exports are up compared to last year.
