Larger than expected production from Xinjiang raises total production estimates to 6.9 million tons (MT), however production is still below the 7.2 MT in MY 11/12. Weak global demand and increasing fiber substitution amongst domestic mills suggests cotton consumption will remain in decline, which in conjunction with record high government stocks of more than 7 MT, will reduce import demands.

MY12/13 domestic cotton production is forecast to drop to 6.85 million metric ton (MMT) on lower forecast planted area of 5.05 million hectares (MHa), while cotton consumption is expected to increase to 10 MMT.  High domestic stock levels could weaken import demand in MY12/13, depending on the level of China¡¯s market intervention measures.  The U.S. remains China¡¯s largest cotton supplier with MY10/11 sales of 1.2 MMT.

Several surveys conducted in China show MY 12/13 cotton planting area intentions are lower than previous years following lower profits for MY 11/12 crop and sluggish demand from a recovering domestic textile industry.  China has been supporting the domestic floor price of RBM19,800/MT with purchases for state reserve and believed to be supplementing stocks with imported cotton as well.  China¡¯s National Statistics Bureau (NSB) announced MY11/12 domestic cotton production is 6.6 MMT based on plan...
