ATO/GZ visited one of CR Vanguard’s super centers and met Mr. Liao, the general merchandising manager (GMM) in Guangzhou. As one of the leading retail chains in China, the supermarket, super center and super store are Vanguard’s main store formats in South China. Mr. Liao foresees another new format, “super center plus,” gaining popularity as it allows recruitment of more licensee shops on the first floor. Although many customers are price-sensitive, more and more local consumers with higher incomes are ready to try new items, including high-quality U.S. imported foods. However, locally produced food items with lower price and fairly good quality compete fiercely in the market. In Mr. Liao’s experience, stable supply chain and lack of constant promotion are two disadvantages many imported foods exporters face in the Chinese market. Lack of systematic control of quality and supply chain management leads to poor quality produce items. |
